Zhang Xueliang Cultural Park

Introduction to Zhang Xueliang Cultural Park

Located in Taoshan Village, Wufeng Township, Hsinchu City, the Zhang Xueliang Cultural Park is surrounded by mountains and lush greenery, offering a tranquil retreat. Reconstructed on its original site in 2014 to recreate the historical significance of Zhang Xueliang's imprisonment at Qingquan, the park converted the 2008 building into the "Indigenous Peoples' Hall," thus integrating the two into the "Zhang Xueliang Cultural Park." In addition to the two halls, the park also features the Sanmao Dream House, a tribal market, and a bronze statue depicting his life under house arrest, crafted from photographs and manuscripts. Due to its proximity to Qingquan Hot Springs, the park also includes the "General's Bath" foot bath. The hot spring is a neutral sodium bicarbonate spring, colorless and odorless, allowing visitors to relax, soak in the warm water, and improve circulation after hiking or sightseeing. Besides the weekend market, the area around the cultural park also offers attractions such as the Qingquan Suspension Bridge and the Qingquan Catholic Church, making it a popular destination for many tourists.

An Overview of the History of Zhang Xueliang Cultural Park

In 1936, Zhang Xueliang, together with Yang Hucheng, launched the Xi'an Incident, detaining Chiang Kai-shek, then Chairman of the Military Commission of the Nationalist Government, and advocating for "stopping the suppression of the Communists and jointly resisting Japan." Although the incident ended peacefully, Zhang Xueliang was spared imprisonment but began over fifty years of confinement in 1937. In 1946, Zhang Xueliang and his wife Zhao Yidi were sent there, remaining under house arrest until 1959 when they were released and returned to Beitou. However, they still needed prior permission to leave and were subject to surveillance. Finally, in 1993, he regained his freedom, flew to Hawaii to reunite with his family, and enjoyed his later years.
